We reveal today (see page 1) plans to build a commercial development there which would include a supermarket, four shops, a coffee shop, and a 30-seat cinema behind the On the Spot store. There would also be 111 car parks. And needless to say the plans are causing a stir. If you read the feedback (see page 10) to our article last week over an idea to turn the failed Maori Village site at Ferrymead into a dog park, then it’s a nobrainer. The verdict is unanimous – dogs should be let loose on the site. Readers also have given the thumbs up to the re-opening of the Redcliffs Dairy. News Ferry parking fight continues By Emily O’Connell MORE OPTIONS will be looked into before bus parking is decreased at the Diamond Harbour Ferry terminal in Lyttelton. It follows a decision by the Lyttelton Port Company to reduce bus parking spaces from three to one and not provide a pick-up/drop-off zone. An urgent meeting was held by the Banks Peninsula Community Board with the LPC, Environment Canterbury and the city council on Monday. It was decided at the meeting that the LPC and ECan would look into more options and come back to the board in a few weeks’ time. Diamond HarPeter Davie bour Residents’ Association chairman Richard Suggate said the further investigation is good but he’s not pessimistic nor optimistic about the final outcome. He said the LPC should put the public interest above their own. Community board member Jed O’Donoghue said he’s pleased other resolutions will be considered but ultimately the

board don’t have the final say. “At the end of the day we can only influence them because its their land,” he said. An online petition calling for better public access to the Diamond Harbour ferry terminal has attracted more than 230 signatures in two weeks. Set up by the Diamond Harbour Residents Association, the petition calls on the city council and Environment Canterbury to “ensure that within 100m of the Diamond Harbour ferry

terminal, there is adequate bus parking on the Lyttelton wharf and that there is a drop-off/pickup zone for private vehicles.” Mr Suggate told a board meeting two weeks ago that the LPC’s refusal to provide a drop-off zone would force the infirm, disabled or with heavy parcels, to walk from Norwich Quay. Port company chief executive Peter Davie said LPC staff met with the Banks Peninsula Community Board on July 31. Mr Davie previously said the

they are working with ECan to ensure it has minimum impact on current services and it will not affect ferry users at all. He said an upgrade of the existing Diamond Harbour Ferry facilities will take place at the same time as the LPC staff car park is being built adjacent to Waterfront House and the work should be completed before Christmas. “We will work with Black Cat Cruises to enable people to have access. If there are particular items that require to be around 50m closer to the ferry terminal than they can achieve via the stairs, then we will accommodate them through the port,’’ Mr Davie said. Black Cat Cruises chief executive Paul Milligan said they had been involved with discussions about the issue with LPC and ECan. “An ideal site is to move us down to the west end with the new marina, which will be new and there will be room for buses to move around. But we’re not going to get that in the near future so we just need to make the best of the facilities we currently have.” He said that was part of LPC’s long term plan, but would take time to come into fruition.

News The Akaroa French Festival took place on the weekend with hundreds venturing out into changeable weather for the event. The three-day festival kicked off on Friday night with a family-friendly street party. The biennial event celebrates Akaroa’s French heritage with entertainment, food, culture and history. A theatrical drama took place on the beach on Saturday, re-enacting a French and Maori exchange in 1840s. There was also a parade from the beach to the recreation ground where the market day took place with stalls, games, food and live entertainment.

History on show in garden tour

By Sarla Donovan THE GOVERNORS Bay House and Garden Show is back for the first time in 11 years. Homes and gardens large and small make up the 13 on show, including several which have undergone major post-earthquake repairs. The self-guided tour includes recently restored St Cuthbert’s Church – built between 196062, it is one of the oldest stone churches in the country. It was designed by George Mallinson, who was also the architect of the Holy Trinity Church in Lyttelton. Waitahuna, the original Dyer homestead in Governors Bay is also part of the tour, along with one of New Zealand’s finest formal gardens, the internationally significant Ohinetahi owned by Sir Miles Warren. Ohinetahi Homestead was built in 1864 and has been restored after suffering serious damage in the September 4, 2010, earthquake. One of the PTA organising committee members, Felicity Robertson, said it was very generous of the owners to include it in the tour as it is normally $15 to visit.

It is one of 1000 limited edition shirts with a certificate of authenticity signed by Sir Peter Blake and Sir Russell Coutts who headed the 1995 campaign. The auction is one of many items on the website GalaBid, raising money for the rebuild of Pleasant Point Yacht Club’s clubrooms in South New Brighton Park. The club lost all its facilities in the earthquakes. The auction is now under way until noon on Saturday. Team New Zealand will be hosted by the yacht club at an event on Saturday, where the auctioning of GalaBid items will continue. Other items up for grabs include several seats on a helicopter ride piloted by Richie McCaw to a mystery location, a horse power experience in a dual sulky behind Monkey King, New Zealand’s top harness racer, and a hot laps session at Mike Pero Motorsport Park in a V8 Supercar driven by Greg Murphy.

The price of the tour will help to develop the Governors Bay School playground. Next year, the school buildings are undergoing substantial renovations and the PTA is keen to develop the playground with an orchard area, landscaping and new play equipment. “This is an educational, recreational and social hub of the

News Fun to be had at gala SPRING HAS sprung, and Heathcote Valley School is gearing up for their annual twilight gala. It’s the main fundraising event for the school and organiser Jina Russell said she’d been planning since June for a “brilliant” community get-together which usually attracted around 2500 people. “I really love the atmosphere of getting it ready and everyone helping out. And just seeing kids running around having fun and families relaxing and being able to catch up.” This was her first year running the event, which was “scary, as the previous years it has been an amazing lady called Mel. I’ve got bit shoes to fill.” The Friday night timeslot made for a “relaxed, after-work environment for families,” Ms Russell said. “It’s a great way to end the week.” The evening involves games and activities to suit all ages, live entertainment and music from school and community groups, stalls, food, raffles, chocolate wheel and bake sale. Your Local Views Readers respond to the article regarding a lobby effort to get a dog park for Ferrymead Cherry Daly – Regarding the proposed dedicated dog park at Ferrymead. I agree that the eastern suburbs are in dire need of a dedicated dog park. This site is central to the region and would be absolutely perfect. Many thanks to city councillor Yani Johanson for making this proposal and hoping that the notoriously anti-dog city council will see their way clear to approving this as soon as possible.

Gayel Marquet – That sounds like a fabulous idea but the reason dogs love the beach is that owners do too. Give the owners a major unique reason and features (a pond to splash in) to attract them to Ferrymead and then educate them to be off the beach and I’m all for it – and I don’t even have a dog. Boat safety week a timely reminder Lyttelton-based navigational safety officer Gary Manch writes about Safer Boating Week which starts on Friday AS I am writing, I can see the odd pleasure boat out in the harbour making the most of the lovely day. It’s great to see people out there using our amazing coast for recreation. With Labour weekend not far away, the start of the boating season is here, and hopefully the weather will be kinder to us this season than last. To coincide with the start of the season, Maritime New Zealand is running its nationwide Safer Boating Week from Friday to October 20. I want to highlight the week for two reasons.

First, it’s a timely reminder to get you thinking about your preparation for the upcoming boating season. That means making sure your vessel has been serviced, making sure all the safety equipment is still in good working order, and making sure you have two forms of communication ready to take out on the water. It also means checking that lifejackets are the right size and, in the case of inflatable ones, checking the cylinders are working and manually blowing the lifejacket up, and leaving it overnight to check there are no leaks. Second, it’s a good time to make sure you know the boating rules for where you are going to be. In Canterbury, for example, you must have an identifying

name or number on both sides of your boat. Check out our Navigation Safety Bylaw 2016 (item 20) for full details on identification. It’s available at

WITH THE final election results now announced and my place back in Parliament as the National List MP based in the Port Hills confirmed, it’s time to look ahead to my priorities for the next three years. I will continue to maintain an office here in the Port Hills and be available to assist with constituent cases and concerns. But there are also some specific issues where I think I can make a difference in the Port Hills, particularly within the environmental area. In my last column, I talked about the set up of Te Tapuwae o Rakau Trust, which is now working on developing a structured approach to replanting the Port Hills. I believe leading the set up of this trust is one of the most important contributions I

have been able to make to our electorate, and I look forward to seeing the work the trust does and assisting where I can. Another area of real environmental importance here in the Port Hills electorate is the Heathcote River and Ihutai Estuary. This is something I was involved with even before becoming an MP, in my role as chairman of Te Ihutai Trust. One of the greatest community initiatives we have in our electorate is the annual Mother of All Clean Ups, and I’ve always enjoyed getting in and helping to clean up the

rubbish which pollutes the waterway and its banks. It’s a privilege to live in close proximity to such a beautiful landmark as the Heathcote River. But winding through residential areas carries risks for water quality. There are many issues around silt, chemicals and run-off from metal building products ending up in the river. These are issues that will require ongoing attention from local authorities and from central Government. I am committed to using my position to leave a better and cleaner environment here in the Port Hills.

I SPOKE to a Mt Pleasant woman who is in her 90s during the week. “This has been the most exciting election since I was a young girl,” she said. And it certainly has been exciting. The final make-up of the Government won’t be known for a little while but we can be satisfied the MMP system will deliver us a Government of our choosing, given that the party vote determines how many MPs each party ends up having. I have been re-elected to represent the constituents of Port Hills in Parliament and I feel humbled at the support I received and want to express my thanks to each and every one of you – not just those that supported my re-election, but

everyone who participated in our democratic process. Some countries don’t have the right for citizens to vote and we really should appreciate it more than many do. We should make it as easy as possible for people to vote and I do hope that the technology develops soon so that people will have confidence in online voting. The advance voting was certainly popular this year and is a step in the right direction of making voting more accessible. There are many issues that need support and attention in our electorate and I give you my commitment that I will continue to work hard for you, listen to what locals are saying and get things done for the benefit of our communities. We can face our challenges together and get through difficult times as we have shown in the past. But we’re not there yet. There is still much to do before we can truly say that we are on the road to recovery. But we know we can do it together.

Ferrymead Rotary grants behind community projects Ferrymead Rotary Club member Barbara Crooks writes about neighbourhood inititives which the club supports ONE OF the few positive outcomes of the February 22, 2011, earthquake, was the reinforcement of the value of neighbours. Several major donors gave funds to Rotary to help neighbourhoods come together and to support local community projects. Further donations have allowed Rotary’s neighbourhood committee to continue to support community activities and projects at a local level. These grants are channelled through local Rotary clubs. Ferrymead Rotary has been involved in a dozen or so of these. The club has two on the go right now – the Mt Pleasant Response and Resilience team and the South Brighton Residents’ Association. Robin Arnold, who coordinates Mt Pleasant Response and Resilience, says the grant will be used primarily to assemble community emergency supplies, which will be kept at Mt Pleasant School.

First Crater Rim Ultra a unique marathon By Gordon Findlater SOME OF the country’s top long distance and trail runners will tackle a picturesque yet unforgiving 50km course from Diamond Harbour to Hansen Park on Sunday. The inaugural Crater Rim Ultra will be a unique event. It will be one of the few ultramarathons in the world were the athletes are taken to the start line not only by bus but also by boat – cruising from Lyttelton to Diamond Harbour. The Crater Rim Ultra will see competitors start at the Diamond Harbour rugby grounds at 7.15am and head to the summit of Mt Herbert, 919m above sea level. They will then continue on a track to the top of Gebbies Pass and along the summit through to the top of Briddle Path. They will then loop back to the top of Rapaki Track before descending Rapaki to the finish line at Hansen Park. “We recognised that there’s so much potential there because we have the crater rim trail track which is already there and it’s such an iconic view to see all the different scenery from different angles the whole way around,” said event organiser Jamie Hawker. This year’s event is somewhat of an experiment. From next year, the event has hosting rights

future.” The event also has 10km and 21km distance races which both start and finish at Hansen Park. There will also be two children’s events at Hansen Park. The inaugural ultra-marathon has more than 60 entrants signed up to compete, while the more traditional 21km and 10km events have close to 200. The 50km event on Sunday will also act as a build-up to the 60km Kepler Challenge through

Fiordland National Park in December. The Kepler Challenge has become the country’s premier trail run and attracts about 500 athletes, including a large number of international competitors. The top runners in the 50km ultra-marathon are expected to finish in under five hours. The event will be followed by a presentation with place prizes, spot prizes and a great morning tea for all competitors.

Sumner, Taylors Mistake teams off to lifesaving pool champs A 16-STRONG team from Sumner and a team of three from Taylors Mistake travel to Auckland this week for the 15th annual Surf Life Saving New Zealand pool championships. The championships, which start on Friday, will be the first national event of the 2017/18 surf lifesaving season. The event at Sir Owen G Glenn National Aquatic Centre, Albany, has attracted entries from 687 athletes – 70 more than last year. A total of 31 New Zealand clubs have entered, along with a team of 19 representing Surf Life Saving Australia and another 12 from Surf Life Saving New South

Wales. There will be about 400 races contested across age groups from 10 years through to the masters section. Specific team events will provide an opportunity for the teams to go head-to-head in the 4x50m obstacle relay, 4x25m manikin relay and 4x50 medley relay. “Unlike being out in the surf, competitors can watch the action more closely and clubs can compete together and cheer each other on in a stadium-like environment,” said Surf Life Saving New Zealand sport manager Mike Lord. “Many of our members spend

the cooler winter months training for surf-based rescues in a more controlled environment and this is a great way to demonstrate where they’re at ahead of the new summer patrol season.” Points will be allocated for each individual and team race and will then be added together to show the top clubs.
